The US government’s War on Terrorism has finally reached the digital world of games and allied services. The National Security Agency (NSA) is reportedly infiltrating the World of Warcraft and the Xbox Live to filter our terrorists from amongst the gamers and users. Looks like the government is also playing the game itself haunting digital terrorist here and there.
And the sadder new is that NSA has been doing this since 2008 and unless a game is played offline, gamers playing online could have been infiltrated already with their information and identification already inside NSA’s databases. It’s just a generalization that seems real rather than imaginative. The NSA has been accused of using data from search engines and other tech-related companies even without these companies knowing them.
The surveillance activity could take a toll on the technology-based companies such as Microsoft because of privacy concerns and users’ preference for privacy while playing their favourite games. As to how this works, it’s a guessinggame for now but the revelation is a bit shocking for those who are already stuck with the two games since 2008. Microsoft obviously isn’t aware of the surveillance activity and it may above board if its consent has been sought in whatever form. Microsoft is mum as to its next move for now.
