Aside from new generation iPhones with larger and curved-display features, Apple is planning to launch its biggest iPad to date in order to compete with other manufacturers, according to a local Apple supplier in Korea. The 12.9-inch iPad dubbed “iPad Pro”, makes the current iPad Air look like the minis. Other manufacturers have jumped into bigger-sized slates including Samsung & LG, while recent reports suggest that Panasonic might launch a 20-inch tablet carrying 4K display.
The reason for such endeavor is unknown but pundits think that Apple aims to bridge the gap between tablet and desktop PCs by bringing the Pro. While technical details are scarce at the moment, the purported 12.9-inch iPad will carry ultra high-definition (UHD) display with at least 3,840 × 2,160 pixel resolution. Apple is also acknowledging the fact that in the future, tablets will replace desktop PCs.
Another reason is competition. Samsung Display is reportedly developing huge tablet displays in the range of 10 to 13-inch aimed for future Galaxy tablets. A leaked FCC information suggests that a 12.2-inch Galaxy Note device with 4G LTE connectivity might be in the pipeline. The Korean tech manufacturer has been slowly narrowing the difference in market share with Apple “to within a single digit”, according to Samsung. Cupertino is aware of this scenario which further justifies the move to bigger-sized tablets.
Apple is tight-lipped at the moment but according to the Korean supplier which currently manufactures the alleged iPad Pro display, initial units will be launched by early 2014. Would you be interested in buying the 12.9-inch iPad Pro if it gets released in the market? Share your opinion(s) below.
