A 6TB hard drive is sure a lot of space but a helium-filled one is just extra-ordinary. HGST, a subsidiary ofWestern Digital (WD) and manufacturer of Ultrastar He6, wants the whole world to know that this masterpiece follow the 3.5-inch standard format but is the largest in that aspect. It contains seven stacks which is enough to hold 6TB capacity.
The helium thing makes it increase storage, be energy efficient and making it a little bit lighter With that huge capacity, it is ideal for data centers but big-time users such as CERN, NetFlix, Huawi and HP are also registering their interest. The hard disk is also TCOptimized allowing it to deliver capacity at higher level in a quieter and cooler environment even at the original form factor. The seven-disk infrastructure is made possible by the reduction of spinning disk turbulence. Such design allows a 50% increase in capacity while reducing by 20% the energy needed to make it work.
Two models are offered, one with the SATA 6gbS and the other one with SATA gb/s and the rest of the specs are the same for both. The helium add-on is also quite surprising despite that fact that components under the hood are continuously working in a violent manner, a characteristic known to every Hard Disk Driver. The new Helium HDD is intended for company data centers that include HP, Netflix and Huawei.
