There’s a unique kind of power bank that doesn’t use electricity for re-charging but Hydrogen fuel cells. These cells had been used by astronauts before in space walks but this is going to reveal its use as a recharging unit here in earth rather than outside space. The maker Intelligent Maker calls the system “Upp” and it consists of a hydrogen cartridge which is good for five charges and a USB cable to connect to a device such as a smartphone.
A special kind of “engine” inside the battery provides the power to charge a connected device and it is fueled by hydrogen fuel cells. An app alerts a user whenever the cartridge needs immediate replacement by directing him to a site or a store. The Upp fuel cell charger differs from an ordinary lithium ion battery as it does not require re-charging through the usual electricity method either through a recharging unit for the battery. The device weighs 500 grams.
It operates by attaching the fuel cartridge below the device and then connecting a USB to its destination. It’s a special kind of portable battery since it can be used in areas where electricity is unreliable. The company hopes to sell the device first to telecom for their willing subscribers but it costs $199 in retail in stores.
