Xbox One vs PS4 vs Wii U: And The Winner IS?

Xbox 720? Xbox Durango? Forget it. Microsoft finally unveiled its latest gaming console and named it “Xbox One”. The company’s next-gen console is expected to make entertainment in living rooms livelier and vibrant with its superior processing power and abilities forwatching movies and TV more conveniently. Will it rank first among current and upcoming gaming consoles? Read on.
As the price is to be revealed yet closer to launch during the holidays, for now it is a good practice to compare it with Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Wii U which is now available on the market. It is interesting to note, however, that all three are or will be using Blu-ray for their optical media needs despite the fact that gamers out there download games from the net or purchase them online. Blu-ray allows delivery of tons of information in gigabytes and both users and gamers find it more entertaining compared to the old optical media types.
Starting with the processing power, Wii U has remained with PowerPC technology with its Tri-core IBM PowerPC 1.24Ghz and a RAM at 2Gb while both PS4 and Xbox One are now using GPUs (D3D 11.1 chip with 32Mb embedded memory for Xbox One and next-gen AMD Radeon for PS4) and x86-based processors (8-core x86 CPU for both) and the duo also comes with RAM at 8Gb. Memory for both Xbox One and PS4 is almost at par with former getting 8Gb DDR3 and the latter at 8Gb GDDR5.
The Xbox One has plenty of storage with its 500Gb HDD capacity as opposed to Wii U’s 8-32Gb while PS4 is silent on this point. It also has both in and out for the HDMI while the other two only contain the HDMI out spec. The ports for Xbox One come in Direct Connect, WiFi and USB 3.0 compatibility, that of PlayStation 4 are WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, Ethernet, and USB 3.0, and the Wii U contains only the WiFi and USB 2.0. Of the three, only Wii U has backward compatibility.
The price for both upcoming devices is still unknown as earlier indicated for Xbox One and Wii U which is now out on the market ranges from $299-$349. In terms of motion controls, Xbox One is more advanced with its 2nd-gen Kinect and 1080p cameras, PS4 has the eye dual lens 1280 x 800 camera, and no information is available for Wii U. From the looks of it all it seems that Xbox One has the advantage but in the final analysis it’s not the specs that count but the gaming experience and the games that count.
