Tablo is no ordinary device similar to an ordinarytablet, it’s a DVR that can be connected to an HDTV antenna to get TV programs on air that are freely available within the jurisdiction of Canada and the U.S. Ordinary DVRs only shows contents and nothing more. On the other hand, the Tablo, once connected, streams captured video contents to any device at home or by way of the internet. Broadcast shows in HDTV format can be browsed upon, recorded and then streamed at any time, at anyplace and on any device.
The device also functions as a tablet because of its connectivity feature such as USB ports, Ethernet, external hard driveand a dual-band WiFi. Adapters for chromecast as well as AirPlay are needed for the streaming and for now, the iOS version seems to be available already with the Android expected to come out in a few days. The Tablo allows its users to manipulate programs and to schedule favourite shows at any available time.
Tablo DVR is now at crowd-funding site indiegogo for a $50,000 campaign that ends on December 5. As of this posting, pledges have already reached more than $10,000. Once mass-produced, Tablo will be available in two variants, a dual-tuner for $200, and a quad-tuner for $250. Availability is expected in January 2014.
